Essential Components of a Profile

Attract recruiters and demonstrate your professional brand by creating and maintaining a robust profile.  Watch the below video for a description of the following essential components of a LinkedIn profile. 

  • Photo - Have a clear photo of yourself with minimal background.
  • Headline - Targeted key words or phrases that describe you.
  • 1st Person Summary (About section) Some summary suggestions:
    • Introductory Paragraph: Describe the work you do and the level you do it with any special expertise.
    • 2nd Paragraph: Describe what you do currently (or most recently) and provide a few accomplishments with brief explanation. You can also give an overview of earlier experiences and can include awards or honors.
    • 3rd Paragraph: Describe your personal work style and important character traits related to your profession.
    • 4th Paragraph: Summarize your education.
  • Featured - Upload samples of your work or accomplishments.  
  • Experience - List current/previous work experience with giving details of your accomplishments and responsibilities.
  • Education - List education including core courses, can leave off dates if over 10-15 years. Include any certifications, workshops attended, etc.
  • Additional Sections as needed (Example: Volunteer)
  • Skills & Endorsements - Select technical and soft skills that you possess. Recruiters search by key words so the more specific skills you list, you increase your chances of being found. Your 1st degree connections will be able to endorse these skills as well.
