REVIEW: Determine Main Idea and Summarize

The main idea is the most important point in a passage. Sometimes the main idea is stated directly. Other times you can figure out the main idea by looking for key details that reveal what the text is mainly about. To use details to determine the main idea in a passage, you must distinguish between important and unimportant details.

A summary is a short restatement of the main idea and most important details in a passage. It does not contain the reader's opinions about the topic or judgments about the text.
